Mossburn Distillers & Blenders

Mossburn Distillers is a young company but boasts a wealth of experience in the drinks trade, being a new project from the team behind Marussia Beverages (formerly known as Eaux De Vie), one of the UK’s most respected drinks agencies.

Mossburn are distillers, blenders and bottlers of single malt whiskies, with two distilleries - Torabhaig and Reivers - and a range of independently bottled single malts arranged as follows.

Mossburn Vintage Casks is a handsomely-packaged range of natural colour, unchillfiltered single malt whiskies, assembled in very small batches from a single vintage and bottled at either 46% or cask strength. Distilleries bottled so far include Ardmore, Glentauchers, Benrinnes, Glen Elgin and Mannochmore among others - all very fine, unsung distilleries perfect for independent bottlings.

Mossburn Signature Casks is the other main range and is a rather different proposition, focusing on regional provenance and style: Signature Casks are a series of blended malts from individual regions that have been finished in Mossburn’s specially-coopered casks.

Each region has its own Cask Bill, a kind of recipe of different types of casks designed to bring out the regional character the range demands, so for example the Island malts are finished in a mix of first fill bourbon and heavily-toasted virgin European oak, while the Speyside malts are finished in first fill Oloroso sherry casks and heavily-charred virgin American oak.

In 2017 Mossburn began production at their first distillery: Torabhaig, only the second legal distillery on the Isle of Skye. Torabhaig has a production capacity of half a million litres per year and produces a peated spirit like its neighbour Talisker. The distillery released its long-awaited first single malt Torabhaig 2017 Legacy Series 1 in early 2021, with three further Legacy Series bottlings planned before the planned launch of Torabhaig 10-year-old in 2028.

Around the same time as Torabhaig began distilling in 2017, Mossburn received planning permission for their second and third distilleries on a large site in the Scottish Borders.

The first of these is the Reivers distillery, which is being kept under wraps for now but is known to be an experimental distillery with both pot and column stills capable of making single malt whisky, single grain whisky and other spirit types. The third proposed distillery has a working title of Mossburn and when completed is expected to be a much larger distillery that will produce both malt and grain whiskies.
